The Sharpshooters provides the Battalion with skirmishers and Artillery support. The Company's positions themselves behind the guns and on the flanks of the Artillery line.
When the Artillery is threatened by enemy flanking maneuvers or the enemy enters the artillery safety zone, the Sharpshooters engages them and defeats the threat. The Regiment only enters the safety zone when the Artillery is secure and with the Artillery Commanders permission. The most venerable part of an Artillery Battery is the rear and flanks. Civil War Artillery would always have Infantry or Calvary the guard these areas. Usually the job fell to the reserve components of the Brigade.
The Sharpshooters are equipped as dismounted Cavalry or light Infantry with muskets and carbines. The preferred weapon is a three band musket. Two band muskets are allowed if you already have one. Only Officers are allowed to carry revolvers.
Company’s are to be competent with the skirmish drill and basic Infantry formations. Due to the use of two band muskets and carbine only single line formations will be used.
Sharpshooter (Sniper) Team
Each Company is authorized to have one sniper team. Each will consist of two or three members, an observer(s) and a shooter. All sniper weapons must be approved by the Battalion Staff. Sniper teams may not be utilized at all events and the members should be prepared to fall in with the Company.
